The fungus often appears on walls or ceilings, and one of its favorite meals in the house is drywall. Anyone looking to reduce mold damage is eager to take advantage of products that lessen fungal growth. It is worth noting that the best advice about mold is to prevent it from growing in the first place. Fix plumbing leaks and other water problems as soon as possible before mold has a chance to develop. Control indoor humidity by opening windows and operating fans after showering. Keep indoor humidity below 60%.

Many people believe that bleach is a cure all when it comes to mold cleanup. It’s not. When you see mold on a hard surface such as ceramic tile use detergentand water and a scrub brush or sponge to remove it. Note: do not use bleach. When the cleanup is done, dry the area completely. Avoid exposing yourself or others to mold during the cleaning process. Wear rubber gloves and a disposable paper filter mask (available at hardware stores.) An N-95 rated mask is recommended because it filters out fine dust and mold spores.

Please note that mold may cause staining and cosmetic damage. It might not be possible to clean an item so that its original appearance is restored. This is especially true concerning soft goods. That’s why, absorbent or porous materials, such as ceiling tiles and carpet, may have to be thrown away if they become moldy. Mold can grow on or fill in the empty spaces and crevices of porous materials, so the mold may be difficult or impossible to remove completely. Any traces of mold will grow again if moisture/humidity is present.

1. Identify problem areas in your home and correct them. Preventing mold from growing or spreading might be as simple as ripping up carpet in a damp basement, installing mold-resistant products, or repairing damaged gutters.

2. Dry wet areas immediately. Mold can't grow without moisture, so tackle wet areas right away. 

3. Prevent moisture with proper ventilation. Make sure an activity as simple as cooking dinner, taking a shower, or doing a load of laundry doesn't invite mold by providing proper ventilation in your bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, and any other high-moisture area. 

4. Equip your home with mold-resistant products. Building a new home or renovating an old one? Use mold-resistant products like mold-resistant drywall or mold-resistant Sheetrock, and mold inhibitors for paints. 

5. Monitor humidity indoors. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30 and 60 percent. You can measure humidity with a moisture meter purchased from your local hardware store. 

6. Direct water away from your home. If the ground around your home isn't sufficiently sloped away from the foundation, water may collect there and seep into your crawlspace or basement.

Moisture and Mold Prevention and Control Tips:

Moisture control is the key to mold control, so when water leaks or spills occur indoors, ACT QUICKLY.  If wet or damp materials or areas are dried within 24 to 48 hours after a leak or spill happens, in most cases, mold will not grow.  

Clean and repair roof gutters regularly.  

Make sure the ground slopes away from the building's foundation so that water does not enter or collect around the foundation.  

Keep air-conditioning drip pans clean and the drain lines unobstructed and flowing properly.

Keep indoor humidity low.  If possible, keep indoor humidity below 60% relative humidity (ideally, between 30% to 50%).  Relative humidity can be measured with a moisture or humidity meter, which is a small, inexpensive instrument (from $10 to $50) that is available at many hardware stores.  

If you see condensation or moisture collecting on windows, walls or pipes, ACT QUICKLY to dry the wet surface and reduce the moisture/water source.  Condensation can be a sign of high humidity

Mildew is a specific kind of mold, usually with a flat growth habit.

Mildew could be downy or powdery: Downy mildew starts as yellow spots that first become brighter in appearance and then the color changes to brown. Powdery mildew is whitish in color and that slowly turn yellowish brown and then black.

Types of Mold Found Indoors

Mold can be found everywhere, indoors and out. There are over 10,000 different species of mold, but out of this massive group, only 5 genera of mold are commonly found indoors

1. Alternaria: Spores from this type of mold are in their highest concentration from spring to late fall in most areas. It has a coloring that can range from black to grey to dark brown.
2. Aspergillus: This mold is one of the most common types that we find indoors. There are over 200 different species in type of mold. It is often mistaken for “toxic black mold” because it can appear black in color, but it also comes in a variety of other shades including grey, brown, yellow, green, and white.
3. Cladosporium: Mold from this genus is also one of the most common molds found indoors. It can survive in colder temperatures than other molds. This mold is generally a dark olive green or black in color.
4. Penicillium: If this genus of mold sounds familiar, it may be because some members of this group are used to produce penicillin and create antibiotics! Other species in this genus are used for cheese making as well! This type of mold likes to inhabit carpeting, wallpaper, drywall, and insulation. It is usually blue or green, and it often creates a musty odor.
5. Stachybotry chartarum: Also known as “black mold,” this type of mold produces mycotoxins (toxic compounds) that may be harmful to humans. While the mold produces toxins, the mold itself is not actually toxic. Even so, you should have it removed as quickly as possible. This type of mold usually only appears on surfaces that have been in contact with water for a while, so always be sure to check your home for hidden leaks. Despite the phrase “black mold” this mold is actually a very dark green.

Here's Why You Shouldn't Use Bleach On Mold

Did you know that you should absolutely 100% not use ANY bleach to kill mold? That’s been the common trick for years, you have mold? Use bleach. But that can actually do more harm than good. If you read the label on your bottle of bleach, it’ll probably say don’t use on non-porous surfaces like tile or ceramic. Basically, for bathrooms or kitchen countertops.

Chlorine bleach is diluted with water to make it safer for household use, and it evaporates much faster than normal water does. So, it won’t stick around on surfaces long enough, nor will it seep down into the surface the bleach is on to fully kill all of the mold. Mold has little roots that stretch down into the surface, like a weed. Don’t get all of the root and the mold will come back. The surface may also look clean, but bleach is just doing what it does best: stripping the color. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean its not there.

How high humidity can cause mold damage in your home

High levels of airborne moisture and warm temperatures indoors can contribute to the increased likelihood of mold growth in your home, even if you have air conditioning operating. The key to preventing and stopping indoor mold growth is to control excessive moisture and condensation. Keeping susceptible areas in the home clean and dry is critical. In general, mold will not grow indoors without water, dampness or excessive moisture.

Three main factors contribute to condensation of water on building surfaces:

• Relative Humidity: Condensation occurs when the air is saturated with water and it cannot hold any more moisture. For example, steam generated from bathroom showers or from cooking can fill up the air with moisture, which will then condense into drops of water on cooler surfaces, such as mirrors and windows. Where possible, localized sources of humidity, such as clothes dryers, should be directly vented to the outdoors. To lower indoor humidity during warm, humid weather, air conditioners should be used.
• Temperature: Warm air holds more moisture than cold air. Condensation occurs when warm humid air comes into contact with a cold surface and the moisture condenses into water. This can often be seen on single-pane windows, where water condenses and then runs down, causing the wood frames and sills to rot and the wall under the windows to blister.
• Poor Ventilation: Indoor humidity can build up if there is not enough ventilation and exchange of indoor and outdoor air. Where there is little or no air movement, such as behind dressers and cabinets, surfaces can remain cooler than surrounding areas, which can lead to increased condensation and mold growth. It is recommended that the area is ventilated and the occupants use exhaust fans (vented to the outdoors) to remove moisture from high-humidity areas, particularly in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry areas. Furniture should be moved slightly away from walls so that air can freely pass behind it. Air should be allowed to circulate between rooms and regularly ventilate to remove humid air. Fans should be used as needed. 
• In the case of floods or leaking pipes, any standing water should be promptly removed and water-damaged materials should either be dried out and cleaned, or removed and replaced. Porous materials that are wet for more than 48 hours are likely to produce mold growth and should be discarded. No one wants to deal with this issue, but it is important to know which are the correct steps, and which are wrong, if it becomes a problem in your home. There are many mold myths that could lead to the spreading of growth if they are followed. To ensure you know fact from fiction, we have outlined some of the most well-known myths as well as the facts. 

Bleach Kills Mold

Bleach is a not good option for killing mold. It is effective if the growth is on a hard, solid surface, such as tile or glass, but it will not work when the surface is porous. Unfortunately, many growths occur on these materials, like drywall and wood, in our homes. Bleach does not soak into porous materials, which means it can’t reach the growth spread out through the pores, it only kills the surface. The outer surface of the affected area will appear clean, as the bleach will have whitened any stains and scrubbed away the exterior mold, but the internal mold will be quick to grow back.

Bleach may even intensify a mold problem. The chlorine in bleach quickly evaporates which leaves behind a lot of water. Water that will soak into porous materials and then feed the mold that was left behind, potentially making the problem worse than it was originally.

Dead Mold Doesn't Need to Be Removed
