Slow Roof Leaks Can Cause Major Damage to Your Commercial Building
8/19/2022 (Permalink)
Some may argue that the most dangerous damage to a building is a slow roof leak. Roof leaks are not always gushing waterfalls. Sometimes they are slow trickles that can cause extensive damage when left undetected. Damages can range from saturated materials to compromising structural integrity to microbial growth. No amount of damage is a good thing, but some are worse than others.
What Can Cause a Roof Leak?
Fierce winds, thunderstorms, hail, and snow can produce roof leaks. Poorly or improperly installed roofs and aging of roofing materials can also be the culprit. Since a roof leak can occur at any point, it is best to have your roof inspected once or twice a year. Contact a roofing specialist after a severe storm or if you notice the following signs.
Potential Signs of a Roof Leak
- Discoloration of ceilings or walls
- Discoloring or falling ceiling paint
- Peeling paint or bubbling wallpaper
- Crumbling drywall
- Wood in attic decaying
- Shingles that are curling, cupping, or missing
- A persistent musty smell or foul odors
- Presence of mold on ceiling and attic
How Do You Know If You Have Microbial Growth?
Microbial growth forms when spores in the air make their way into high moisture areas such as the bathroom or kitchen. If your commercial building leaks, the microbial spores could feed off the moisture and begin to spread. Microbial growth can be hazardous to the health of everyone in your building if not treated promptly and correctly. Once it sets into materials, it can be difficult and costly to remove. Microbial growth can also travel through HVAC ducts. Unresolved, it can result in a shutdown of the facility for health risks. It only takes a couple of days in the right conditions for mold to grow. Therefore, it is crucial for mold prevention to repair any structural damage as soon as it occurs.
Tackle the Problem Before it Worsens
The most important thing to remember when experiencing damage is to act fast. Waiting to repair or contain a leak can cause long-term damage and become costly. A roof leak may not be located where the actual damage is visible. Water can travel quickly and may be tricky to pinpoint the actual source. Just because water is not actively pouring from the roof leak does not mean that it will not happen in the future. If you see signs of a roof leak, minimize the potential damage and act now.
If you suspect water damage has occurred, contact SERVPRO of Texarkana immediately. Our trained professionals are on standby to perform water restoration and get your company back up and running in no time!

Mold... don't be scammed.
3/23/2022 (Permalink)
The services of mold remediation range from a simple wipe-down of slime mold on a few bathroom tiles, to full-blown containment and demolition of badly infested and damaged structural materials. Don't let scam artists fool you.
The level of service range from self do it, to requiring professional assistance, and that is determined by certain standards, some set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other protocol and recommendations are suggested by licensed Industrial Hygienists and even by mold contractors.
This is where it gets tricky. Some mold remediation contractors can take advantage of persons who are not familiar with mold to convince them that a whole lot of services are needed. Not all of these services are required. The EPA can provide the best information about mold.
Search “EPA mold” and a wealth of information will show up from their official website. This way, the consumer can sift through the mountain of “information” and get down to the basics. The EPA removes the fear and confusion over this topic. For example, the EPA says that the consumer should be able to clean away several square feet of mold without having to hire a professional. Of course they suggest safe practices and present thoughtful ideas about this suggestion.
The EPA also makes it perfectly clear when professional help is really required. If you have a mold problem that requires professional help, please consider SERVPRO of Texarkana at 903-832-4400.
Mold... A Four Letter Word
3/21/2022 (Permalink)
Mold is a four-letter word… most people have a negative feeling as soon as they hear the word. Ironically mold is an important part of life. It is part of the fungi kingdom and it interacts with plants and the eco system in valuable ways. Scientists inform us that life, as we know it, would not be possible without mold. Bakers and brewers and cheese makers rely on mold and yeasts to make their products. There are hundreds of thousands of molds and only a few of them create negative affects on humans.
Why does mold have a bad reputation?
The answer is because there are molds that are able to produce tiny spores that become airborne.
One of the best sources to learn about mold is to visit the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website using mold as a search phrase. You will get easy to understand information about mold, and even tips on how to remove it. Another thing to do is to give us a call, SERVPRO of Texarkana 903-832-4400.
FUNGUS
11/22/2021 (Permalink)
Mold is a tenacious organism. The fungus grows any time it has enough moisture and a food source, which is a real headache for homeowners who want to avoid mold damage. There are many places within the home where spores can settle and grow whole new colonies, such as the basement or the bathroom. The fungus often appears on walls or ceilings, and one of its favorite meals in the house is drywall. SERVPRO understands that homeowners are on the lookout for ways to reduce fungal growth in their homes, which is why some of our customers ask us about the use of mold resistant drywall or sheetrock.
Anyone looking to reduce mold damage is eager to take advantage of products that lessen fungal growth. Of course, we are not suggesting you remove your existing drywall and replace it with mold resistant drywall – that would be very costly! However, you might be wondering if mold resistant drywall is a sensible option in situations where drywall needs replacing.
How can sheetrock be made with less risk of mold growth? The answer is in the construction and the materials. Traditional plasterboard consists of a layer of gypsum, sandwiched between a facing and a backing sheet. The facing and backing are usually comprised of paper – and paper is a great example of an organic material that is food for mold.
Fungus resistant sheetrock is a nonorganic material that is less attractive to spores. How is it made to resist fungus? The answer is usually one of two things: By doing away with layers in favor of a homogeneous layer of gypsum, or by replacing the paper layers with an inorganic material such as fiberglass.
No manufacturer can guarantee their product is mold free, and fungus can still grow on walls made out of the new sort of sheetrock. Also, the newer type of plasterboard typically costs around 10% more than its counterparts. However, removing the paper layer does reduce the opportunities for mold growth, and as such, it is worth considering.
SERVPRO is on hand to help with mold cleanup. Our IICRC-certified teams create a sealed area for remediation and use tools techniques such as scrubbing and HEPA vacuuming to remove visible mold. For help with fungal remediation call SERVPRO of Texarkana at (903) 832-4400 for assistance today.
Don't Ignore Mold
10/21/2021 (Permalink)
There are companies that can remediate mold in your home if and when you get infested. Molds are part of nature and exist in home environments. Mold spores can circulate through your HVAC duct work, enter your home on your clothes or the fur of your dog.
Mold, when it is present impacts people is various ways, especially allergic individuals to allergens, pollens and the mycotoxins which are produced by mold colonies. Others only feel uncomfortable and tired a good portion of the time. Mold proliferation can occur if the initial problem isn't tackled quickly.
The difficulty of most people is that they cannot see where these fungi are growing. You can sense it by the smell under many conditions. It has an earthy, musty smell and occasionally people only think it is a wet smell. That is part of the problem as a water leak is often the source of moisture that allows for mold growth. Water can come in through the basement or crawlspace walls or from a leaking pipe just about anywhere in the home.
These fungi can become attached to any surface, often behind walls, above ceilings and within subfloors. They can become entangled in the pile of your carpet and in any room such as the kitchen and bathroom where moisture is present. Health effects can result from the infiltration of mold and mold spores as they travel from one room to another in the air conditioner or heating system. If you smell this odor, the best thing to do is to call a mold remediation firm like SERVPRO, to inspect for mold infestations, and if found, to recommend professional mold remediation. Mold, as any legitimate company will verify, cannot be totally removed and killed from your property. Returning your interior to acceptable levels for health and safety, while cleaning and restoring any damaged items or building materials, are the goals. Of course, the sources of moisture must be discovered and fixed to reduce the likelihood of a reoccurrence.
SERVPRO has the specialized equipment that can locate where mold is colonizing. The trained, insured technicians from SERVPRO have the experience to know where to look and how to remediate the mold growths. The process for cleaning this mold consists of containment barriers (an example is poly sheeting) and negative pressure systems that keep the contaminated areas separated from unaffected areas of the house until the cleaning and sanitizing is complete. The cleaning is conducted by following the standards set forth by the IICRC. SERVPRO has specially developed cleaning agents for restoring mold damaged items from staining and advanced growth.
While this cleaning is going on, dehumidifiers are set up to help remove excess moisture (target RH in the house is 45%) that, if the levels are left too high, can continue to allow this mold growth. Air scrubbers are employed to purge the air of most mold spores and foggers help to sanitize and deodorize the affected areas.
When you have that sense that an earthy, musty odor is coming from the basement, the attic or even from inside of the wall, call SERVPRO of Texarkana at (903) 832-4400 to get us on the job to remedy mold damage to your East Bay home or property.
Mold issue? Need Tips?
9/29/2021 (Permalink)
It is worth noting that the best advice about mold is to prevent it from growing in the first place. Fix plumbing leaks and other water problems as soon as possible before mold has a chance to develop. Control indoor humidity by opening windows and operating fans after showering. Keep indoor humidity below 60%.
Many people believe that bleach is a cure all when it comes to mold cleanup. It’s not. When you see mold on a hard surface such as ceramic tile use detergentand water and a scrub brush or sponge to remove it. Note: do not use bleach. When the cleanup is done, dry the area completely. Avoid exposing yourself or others to mold during the cleaning process. Wear rubber gloves and a disposable paper filter mask (available at hardware stores.) An N-95 rated mask is recommended because it filters out fine dust and mold spores.
Please note that mold may cause staining and cosmetic damage. It might not be possible to clean an item so that its original appearance is restored. This is especially true concerning soft goods. That’s why, absorbent or porous materials, such as ceiling tiles and carpet, may have to be thrown away if they become moldy. Mold can grow on or fill in the empty spaces and crevices of porous materials, so the mold may be difficult or impossible to remove completely. Any traces of mold will grow again if moisture/humidity is present.
It is tempting to paint or caulk over top of moldy surfaces. Don’t! Always clean up the mold and dry the surfaces before painting. Paint applied over moldy surfaces will almost always peel.
Need more ideas about self-do it mold cleaning… the EPA website provides plenty of helpful advice concerning mold cleanup. The site also informs its’ readers that experts should be consulted when visible mold has affected 10 square feet or more of interior surface.
If you’re unsure about how to clean an item, or if the contaminated item is expensive or of sentimental value, contact SERVPRO of Texarkana. We are specialists in mold cleanup and we work with furniture repair, restoration, painting, art conservation experts. We also perform HVAC cleaning, carpet cleaning, and odor control and other specialty cleaning work. Should you need our services, or wish to talk about mold, call us today at 903-832-4400... What is Mold?
8/20/2021 (Permalink)
Mold Is Everywhere! You can easily spot the most visible type of mold, called mildew, which begins as tiny black spots that often grows into larger colonies.
Mold growth requires moisture. The sources of moisture could be Washing, cooking, air humidifiers, condensation or leaks from plumbing or from the outside. Poor ventilation contributes to higher humidity levels and leads to condensation, which also allows mold growth.
If you have a mold problem in your home or business, consider the following facts:
- Significant mold growth can occur in 48-72 hours.
- Mold may present a greater risk to children, the elderly, and anyone with respiratory problems.
- A strong, musty odor may indicate hidden mold behind drywall or under carpeting.
What to Do:
- Stay out of affected areas.
- Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
- Contact SERVPRO of Texarkana for mold remediation services.
What Not to Do:
- Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
- Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
- Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
- Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.
What you can do until help arrives
In as little as 48 hours, mold can quickly become a problem in your home or business when there’s a water intrusion, like a roof leak or leaking water line. Mold can cause health effects and can also cause significant damage to your property. SERVPRO of Texarkana has the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem.

How to help prevent mold
6/15/2021 (Permalink)
1. Identify problem areas in your home and correct them. Preventing mold from growing or spreading might be as simple as ripping up carpet in a damp basement, installing mold-resistant products, or repairing damaged gutters.
2. Dry wet areas immediately. Mold can't grow without moisture, so tackle wet areas right away.
3. Prevent moisture with proper ventilation. Make sure an activity as simple as cooking dinner, taking a shower, or doing a load of laundry doesn't invite mold by providing proper ventilation in your bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, and any other high-moisture area.
4. Equip your home with mold-resistant products. Building a new home or renovating an old one? Use mold-resistant products like mold-resistant drywall or mold-resistant Sheetrock, and mold inhibitors for paints.
5. Monitor humidity indoors. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30 and 60 percent. You can measure humidity with a moisture meter purchased from your local hardware store.
6. Direct water away from your home. If the ground around your home isn't sufficiently sloped away from the foundation, water may collect there and seep into your crawlspace or basement.
7. Clean or repair roof gutters. Have your roof gutters cleaned regularly and inspected for damage. Repair them as necessary, and keep an eye out for water stains after storms that may indicate a leak.
8. Improve air flow in your home. Without good air flow in your home, that excess moisture may appear on your walls, windows and floors. To increase circulation, open doors between rooms, move furniture away from walls, and open doors to closets that may be colder than the rooms they’re in. Let fresh air in to reduce moisture and keep mold at bay.
9. Keep mold off household plants. They're beautiful and help keep your indoor air clean — and mold loves them. The moist soil in indoor plants is a perfect breeding ground for mold, which may then spread to other areas of your house.
Call us if you have any signs of mold, we have trained professionals to handle the infestation. 903-832-4400.
Mold Prevention
6/7/2021 (Permalink)
Moisture and Mold Prevention and Control Tips:
Moisture control is the key to mold control, so when water leaks or spills occur indoors, ACT QUICKLY. If wet or damp materials or areas are dried within 24 to 48 hours after a leak or spill happens, in most cases, mold will not grow.
Clean and repair roof gutters regularly.
Make sure the ground slopes away from the building's foundation so that water does not enter or collect around the foundation.
Keep air-conditioning drip pans clean and the drain lines unobstructed and flowing properly.
Keep indoor humidity low. If possible, keep indoor humidity below 60% relative humidity (ideally, between 30% to 50%). Relative humidity can be measured with a moisture or humidity meter, which is a small, inexpensive instrument (from $10 to $50) that is available at many hardware stores.
If you see condensation or moisture collecting on windows, walls or pipes, ACT QUICKLY to dry the wet surface and reduce the moisture/water source. Condensation can be a sign of high humidity

Ensuring Your Home is Safe after Water Damage Incidents
3/15/2021 (Permalink)
Financial and sentimental losses are common outcomes of water spills whenever they affect homes. However, there are other ways that water intrusion can affect your home. Deterioration of structural materials in some sections, such as a staircase, which endures regular strain, can lead to safety issues. Mold development can also put you and your family at risk since mold can cause health effects. Part of our water restoration service is to eliminate all issues that might lead to safety problems.
Speed is a crucial weapon against future safety problems when there is water damage in your home. Fast water extraction prevents deeper permeation into materials such as wood preserving their structural integrity. It also reduces the chances of mold developing since it takes 24-48 hours for mold to start growing. Our SERVPRO technicians have access to different tools to fast track water extraction, including:
Truck-mounted water extractors
Wet-vacs
Water Extraction wands
Water claws
The materials covering surfaces can slow down the water extraction because of their high absorbent nature or hide some moisture leading to structural damage in the future. Removing the carpet from the stairs helps create room for thorough water extraction. Other materials such as wallpaper can act as moisture barriers creating perfect conditions for material deterioration. Our SERVPRO technicians help remove carpets and perform any controlled demolition to achieve the intended goal.
Cleaning all soiled areas and drying any moisture remnants is essential in controlling microbial growth and material deterioration. Using professional cleaning agents with antimicrobial properties helps. Moisture removal mostly involves adjusting the evaporation rate by increasing heat and air movements. Our SERVPRO technicians use high-speed air movers and dehumidifiers, which extract moisture from the air and exhaust warm air, which increases the rate of drying.
Addressing all issues that might lead to problems after a water loss incident is crucial. Call SERVPRO of Texarkana to help ensure your home remains safe. You can reach us at 903- 832-4400 any time. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.
Prevent Mold in Closets
1/26/2021 (Permalink)
Moisture can come from many sources. Even wet or damp clothing can be a water source. Homeowners sometimes find that their closets become a source of mold and mildew.
Here are a few tips to prevent mold in your closet.
- Be sure any clothes, linens or towels are completely clean and dry before storing them.
- Leave space around stored clothing allows more air to circulate. Do not pack clothes too tightly.
- Leave the closet door open when possible.
- Wire shelving provides greater air circulation than solid shelves.
- Keep your items off the floor to keep moisture from appearing underneath them. Hang the clothes or keep them in boxes.
- Air out your closets occasionally by clearing them out and washing any clothing.
- Do not keep your dry-cleaning in plastic bags. Their polyethylene composition traps humidity around fibers, and the dampness encourages mold growth.
- Leave the light on - Install an energy-efficient light in the closet. Remember mold needs moisture to live, so the warmth from a low wattage light bulb can help keep the closet dry.
- Don’t ignore a musty smell; it can only mean one thing, mold is growing somewhere and it has to be taken care of. This is when you need to call for a certified mold remediation contractor.
Here at SERVPRO of Texarkana, we have the experience, knowledge, and expertise necessary to help you with any mold damage or preventive practices. We are also available for cleanup after fire and water damage. Call us today at 903-832-4400
Mold in Crawlspaces
12/31/2020 (Permalink)
In the humid air, moisture is constantly present. Combining moisture with a dark and undisturbed area, such as a crawlspace, will often lead to mold growth.
Crawlspaces are rarely bothered by homeowners as they are usually small, dark, closed off, and house various bugs or other unwanted critters. When we avoid crawl spaces however, we prevent air circulation and sunlight in the area. The unbothered area is an ideal place for mold growth because moisture is not evaporated, and the temperature is kept relatively constant.
Mold thrives in areas that are moist and kept at a temperature ranging from 60 to 80 degrees. A crawl space ends up being an ideal place for mold growth due to its environmental conditions.
Considering you don’t regularly go into your crawl space, and it isn’t open to the rest of your home, you may think a little mold is nothing to worry about. Unfortunately, that is not the case.
Mold spores are tiny and easily released into the air. Spores can slip through cracks, be pulled in from air conditioning systems, or even float through open doors or windows. The mold spores can cause health effects when breathed in on a regular basis.
Is Mold Really That Bad?
12/7/2020 (Permalink)
Unfortunately, as much as we try to avoid mold in our homes and businesses – it’s almost impossible. Mold is everywhere.
Did you know that there are over 200,000 species of fungi in the world? And that includes over 100,000 types of mold too. While some species of mold can be bad for humans, not all of it is! Some molds can definitely be our friendly little helpers.
If you’ve ever been sick with a sinus infection or bronchitis and you’ve seen the doctor she may have prescribed you the antibiotic Penicillin, which is actually a type of mold! It typically grows on bread or other cheeses and has a distinctive green/blue color that’s sometimes mixed with white or gray. If you enjoy blue cheese salad dressing, then that’s a type of Penicillin! Penicillin has been in use as a drug since the 30s and is incredibly effective in treating infections.
While some mold is good, we still cannot stress enough that mold in your home is dangerous. It can cause health effects to anyone, including those with asthma, children, or the elderly. If you think you may have mold in your home give us a call today at 903-832-4400.
Mold Prevention for Bathroom

Mold Prevention in Bathroom
Mold in bathrooms is a common problem in almost every home. Excessive moisture and provides the perfect conditions for consistent mold growth. Constantly re-caulking, to keep a growth problem under control, can be time consuming and expensive. The best defense against mold is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Here are a few tricks to help you stop mold growth in your bathroom:
- Turn on the ventilation fan while you shower and leave it on for 15 minutes after. If you don’t have a fan open a window or use a dehumidifier. Check ventilation fan for dust and debris, clean as needed.
- Leave shower curtain and/or door open to allow air flow dry out the shower/bathtub.
- Use a squeegee after a bath or shower to remove some of the excess moisture.
- Keeping items inside of the bath/shower can hide mold growth as well as collecting water to promote it. Childs bath toys are particularly notorious for growing mold, so be sure to dry them as much as possible and clean them regularly.
- Fix leaky faucets and shower heads.
- Use a shower curtain that can be put in the washing machine. There are also many mold-resistant liners available.
- Check for any other signs of mold in the bathroom under the sink, behind the toilet, etc.
If you are experiencing mold in your bathroom, regardless of how often you clean, please call us here at 903-832-4400.
Where does mold come from?
10/28/2020 (Permalink)
A mold situation begins with those small, dark, little dots that, with ample moisture and nutrients, gradually spreads and grows across a wall or on a surface. You may open a closet door and see a dark circular pattern growing on the back wall and can only wonder how it got there?
Mold has to come from somewhere and the reality is, it’s no mystery. Mold found indoors comes from the outdoors. There are many types of mold found in the environment—tens of thousands of species in a wide variety of colors, in fact—and many ways it can get in your home. Mold spores can drift indoors through a screened window or open door, or it can be carried in on shoes, a golf bag, a backpack, or a coat that gets hung in a closet, and then spread through the ventilation system. Mold spores can also enter your home through leaky roofs, foundations, door frames or window casements. Once the spores that are carried in or drift in are exposed to dampness, moisture or water, mold usually begins to grow there. The spores that come in through a leak somewhere in the structure of your house are already primed to grow. If you suspect mold in your home, give SERVPRO of Texarkana a call at 903-832-4400.

Different Causes of Mold Growth in your Home
7/20/2020 (Permalink)
Mold Damage is a condition that a lot of homeowners deal with on a regular basis. The main problem with mold is that it doesn't need that much for it to both grow and thrive in your household. Things such as darkness, warmth, humidity and a food source for drywall or wood can all help the mold spores to both thrive and expand throughout the home. In some cases, the mold is very visible like on a bathroom ceiling just above the shower stall. In other cases, you may not even know that you have it because it is in a crawlspace or attic.
If your home has a moisture problem or is prone to floods and leaks, you are living in an environment that is more vulnerable to mold damage problems. This is because you are attracting the mold to your home even if you are not aware of it. Moist environments with excess warmth and food sources for the mold to grow is attractive to the fungus and can help it to grow continually until it becomes out of control and needs professional remediation. In this case, only an expert mold remediation service company, like SERVPRO, will be able to assist you in getting rid of the mold problem.
Mold spores can be found in the air at times, especially in homes that have other factors such as moisture, dampness, and high humidity levels. The mold spores can thrive in this condition and continue to multiply until they become a huge problem for you.
Mold spores cannot grow unless the area in which they are present is moisture and humidity. In fact and to be precise, a humidity level of about 55 percent is needed for mold actually to develop and begin to multiply. Many homes that are in humid climates or deal with lots of rain can have more moisture problems present within their homes than others. Also, leaking plumbing pipes or floods can create humidity in the air. Taking care of plumbing leaks and roof leaks can help to prevent these problems.
Another thing to keep in mind is that mold likes humid and dark environments, which makes your basement, crawlspace and attic all primary locations for mold to grow and thrive over time. It is vital that you continually look around the home to check for mold and to contact SERVPRO at the first sign of a mold problem.

Mold Hides
7/8/2020 (Permalink)
At times, mold is hard to detect.
What usually happens is that mold grows in a place that never dried out, like in this particular home mold was in a crawl space. A combination of moisture, a warm temperature and an organic food source create the perfect environment for mold to grow quickly. In Texas, we have such high humidity, this makes it a perfect spot for mold growth.
Mold spores are everywhere and can easily get into homes and businesses.
Here are some tips to avoid mold growth in your home:
-Do not allow standing water in or around your home
-Use exhaust fans in your home
-Leave the AC Unit running when you are not at home
-If you notice any strange smells, please get it check out immediately
-Do not hesitate or forget to call your local re-mediator, SERVPRO of Texarkana, at 903-832-4400 if you think MOLD may be an issue you are facing in your home. Our trained professional technicians are here to assist and get rid of the mold in your home or business. We are here to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.
Is Mold Damage Covered by my Homeowners Insurance?
5/29/2020 (Permalink)
Whether or not mold damage is covered by home owners insurance often comes down to the source of the moisture. Take an hour or two to review the language of your policy, especially as it pertains to water damage. Look for mold exclusions or limitations. Call your agent if the wording is unclear.
Most basic home owner’s insurance policies exclude coverage of damage caused by mold, fungi, and bacteria. Yet that doesn’t mean a mold claim will be denied automatically. In most cases, if mold results from a sudden and accidental covered peril, such as a pipe bursting, the cost of remediation could be covered. That’s because technically the pipe burst is the reason for the claim, not the mold itself. Claims are more likely to be rejected if mold is caused by neglected home maintenance: long-term exposure to humidity, or repeated water leaks and seepage.
If you are worried and prone to mold in your home it might be possible to purchase a mold rider as an add-on to your existing homeowner’s policy. Ask your agent. A rider will offer additional mold coverage.
Mold or Mildew?
5/27/2020 (Permalink)
We are often asked about the differences between mold vs. mildew and about the best method for cleaning mold and mildew. Mold and mildew are both types of fungi and are similar in many ways and different in many ways.
Mildew
Mildew is a specific kind of mold, usually with a flat growth habit.
Mildew could be downy or powdery: Downy mildew starts as yellow spots that first become brighter in appearance and then the color changes to brown. Powdery mildew is whitish in color and that slowly turn yellowish brown and then black.
Structural damage to homes can occur over time. Mold can also cause health effects.
To prevent mildew at home, keep all the areas moisture-free. There are mildew removers available at stores to eliminate mildew. To protect crops from mildew use mildew-resistant seeds, remove infested plants, avoid overhead heating.
Mold
Mold is a fungi that contains multiple identical nuclei. It grows in the form of hyphae of filaments.
Mold has a fuzzy appearance and can be an orange, green, black, brown, pink or purple in color. Can be found in several shapes.
Mildew can cause damage to plants and crops. It can also cause health effects.
Keep all the areas dry and moisture-free. Check the humidity levels inside the house and take measures to control it. Finish perishable food within 3-4 days
Preventing Mold in Your Bathroom

Mold Prevention in Bathroom
Mold in bathrooms is a common problem in almost every home. Excessive moisture and provides the perfect conditions for consistent mold growth. Constantly re-caulking, to keep a growth problem under control, can be time consuming and expensive. The best defense against mold is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Here are a few tricks to help you stop mold growth in your bathroom:
- Turn on the ventilation fan while you shower and leave it on for 15 minutes after. If you don’t have a fan open or a window use a dehumidifier.
If you are experiencing mold in your bathroom, regardless of how often you clean, please call 903-832-4400 to schedule an appointment!

Types of Mold Found Indoors
4/17/2020 (Permalink)
Mold can be found everywhere, indoors and out. There are over 10,000 different species of mold, but out of this massive group, only 5 genera of mold are commonly found indoors
- Alternaria: Spores from this type of mold are in their highest concentration from spring to late fall in most areas. It has a coloring that can range from black to grey to dark brown.
- Aspergillus: This mold is one of the most common types that we find indoors. There are over 200 different species in type of mold. It is often mistaken for “toxic black mold” because it can appear black in color, but it also comes in a variety of other shades including grey, brown, yellow, green, and white.
- Cladosporium: Mold from this genus is also one of the most common molds found indoors. It can survive in colder temperatures than other molds. This mold is generally a dark olive green or black in color.
- Penicillium: If this genus of mold sounds familiar, it may be because some members of this group are used to produce penicillin and create antibiotics! Other species in this genus are used for cheese making as well! This type of mold likes to inhabit carpeting, wallpaper, drywall, and insulation. It is usually blue or green, and it often creates a musty odor.
- Stachybotry chartarum: Also known as “black mold,” this type of mold produces mycotoxins (toxic compounds) that may be harmful to humans. While the mold produces toxins, the mold itself is not actually toxic. Even so, you should have it removed as quickly as possible. This type of mold usually only appears on surfaces that have been in contact with water for a while, so always be sure to check your home for hidden leaks. Despite the phrase “black mold” this mold is actually a very dark green.
Does Your Ceiling Have Black Mold?
4/13/2020 (Permalink)
If you smell a sour odor in your bathroom, the solution may be above you. The first place that usually develops mold in your household is the bathroom. Few people notice and act on the mold immediately but by the time you do notice it, black mold will look awful. What do you do when you find it, and is it dangerous? Call SERVPRO of Texarkana at (903) 826-1774!
So.. What causes Mold?
The bathroom is a common place for mold to first develop because most bathrooms have all of the risk factors for mold growth including:
- Water, dampness
- High humidity
- Warmth
- Low air circulation
- Low lighting
- Oils
What are the Dangers of Black Mold?
Toxic black mold, can release spores as it feeds on organic materials in common household materials like drywall, carpet, insulation or sub-flooring that have been exposed to moisture. But, severe cases of prolonged exposure, black mold health effects may be more dangerous.
Remember that while you should handle all mold promptly, health effects from mold exposure is very rare. There’s no need to panic. Plus, simply reducing your humidity and increasing air circulation is usually enough to keep mold from returning.
If you do have a reoccurring mold issue be sure to call the cleanup specialists at SERVPRO!
Here's Why You Shouldn't Use Bleach On Mold
2/25/2020 (Permalink)
Did you know that you should absolutely 100% not use ANY bleach to kill mold? That’s been the common trick for years, you have mold? Use bleach. But that can actually do more harm than good. If you read the label on your bottle of bleach, it’ll probably say don’t use on non-porous surfaces like tile or ceramic. Basically, for bathrooms or kitchen countertops.
Chlorine bleach is diluted with water to make it safer for household use, and it evaporates much faster than normal water does. So, it won’t stick around on surfaces long enough, nor will it seep down into the surface the bleach is on to fully kill all of the mold. Mold has little roots that stretch down into the surface, like a weed. Don’t get all of the root and the mold will come back. The surface may also look clean, but bleach is just doing what it does best: stripping the color. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean its not there.

Crawl Spaces
12/30/2019 (Permalink)
Traditionally, crawl spaces are built in homes that do not have a basement or are not constructed on a concrete slab. However, many homes today have crawl spaces in between certain walls as well. It’s important to be cautious of your crawl space, because it’s a prime area for soil and moisture to create mold, mildew, and other harmful materials.

What Causes Mold in the Chimney & Fireplace?
12/26/2019 (Permalink)
Simply put, mold requires moisture. Every cause of mold in your fireplace or chimney is based on the idea that something is allowing moisture into the area. Here are a few common ways moisture can cause fireplace mold:
Poor Ventilation – Poor ventilation traps condensation in the chimney and creates an environment that promotes mold growth.
Broken Chimney Crown – If the chimney crown or chimney cover is damaged, it can let in enough water to create a moisture-rich environment, allowing mold to thrive. Just one crack is enough to feed a mold growth.
Non-Waterproofed Brick & Mortar – If the brick and mortar of your chimney wasn’t properly waterproofed with sealant, water will seep through.
Chimney Cap Failure – If the chimney cap on your chimney is damaged from rust, severe weather, or improper installation, it won’t be able to properly keep moisture out.
In many cases, damage that leads to mold happens slowly over time. You may never notice it until it’s too late, which is why it’s important to have a professional chimney inspection annually.
Got Mold?
11/18/2019 (Permalink)
Mold grows by releasing its spores (reproductive cells) into the air, which are invisible to the naked eye. It can spread and grow anywhere as long as moisture and oxygen are present, but commonly grows on surfaces such as insulation, sheetrock, tile, fabrics and wood. It can enter your home through windows, vents and doorways or it can attach itself to clothing and pets and be carried inside. It might be a shock to learn that you can have hundreds or even thousands of mold spores in one cubic foot of air in your home.
Mold spores that land on a wet or damp spot and begin growing can produce allergens, irritants and potentially toxic substances. Continuous exposure to a moldy environment can cause or worsen pre-existing health effects. Seemingly healthy people can also suffer from throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation or nasal stuffiness in a home with high levels of mold. People who are allergic to mold or who have any pre-existing health issues could get serious infections in their lungs that can spread. Those with asthma could see worsened asthmatic symptoms over time due to exposure to mold spores.
Mold Mold and More Mold
9/9/2019 (Permalink)
One of many ways that mold can affect something. Call us at SERVPRO in Texarkana if you have any mold in your home.
Mold feeds on organic materials, such as wood, paper, many fabrics, and even some types of glue. It literally eats away at these materials, causing them to rot and fall apart. Mold can eat away at materials like wallpaper, drywall, carpet, wooden studs in walls, ceiling tiles, floorboards, and other structures inside the home. Left unchecked, mold can cause damage great enough to lead to the collapse of ceilings, caving in of floorboards, and falling down of walls.
Of course, it takes a while to reach that point. Your house is not going to fall down around you as soon as mold begins to grow in it. Many materials in the home quickly become damaged beyond the point of repair, though, and in time, a home can be completely destroyed by mold growth.
You may expect to find mold in places like bathrooms, basements and attics, but did you know mold can sometimes also be found in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems? It can, and mold in your HVAC system can be particularly damaging to your home, both because it is difficult to remove mold from inside ductwork and because mold inside a home’s air ducts can quickly spread to other areas of the home.

Mold Damage Linked to High Indoor Humidity
7/30/2019 (Permalink)
Mold damage found in a closet
How high humidity can cause mold damage in your home
Residents of the Ark-La-Tex area experience long hot and humid summers. High levels of airborne moisture and warm temperatures indoors can contribute to the increased likelihood of mold growth in your home, even if you have air conditioning operating. Working with a reputable mold remediation company can help you pinpoint the reasons mold growth is an issue in your home as well as remediating the current growth.
Water is the fuel that accelerates mold damage in your home. Mold spores are very opportunistic, gaining enough moisture from small amounts of dampness or small collections of condensation to begin growth. Running an air conditioner is often recommended to reduce interior humidity below 60 percent, the level where mold can find a supportive environment even without spills, leaks, or flooding.
Ironically, AC units can provide the moisture if operating inefficiently or if the wrong size for the space cooled. An air conditioner too small for the area is one problem SERVPRO sees, but an overly powerful system also can fail to reduce the humidity enough to halt mold development.
Air conditioning provides a cooling feeling when it removes moisture from the air, usually by condensing the water vapor on refrigerated coils. If adjusted correctly and draining properly, the system works well and prevents the conditions conducive to mold growth. Sometimes a larger than necessary unit does not operate long enough to reduce the humidity below the “sweet spot” for mold growth. It pumps cold air into the rooms too quickly and then cycles off before the humidity reduces. Mold then grows on the damp surfaces, necessitating mold remediation by our SERVPRO crews.
Keeping AC condensers and coils clean and the drains free-flowing is also key to preventing interior mold growth during a hot summer. If the drain is plugged, it may overflow, depositing moisture on a wall or floor nearby. Mold finds wood and drywall perfect organic surfaces to call home. SERVPRO inspects for these moisture sources when we arrive to assess and plan for mold remediation. If the homeowner does not address these issues, chances are good that mold can return even after we complete a professional treatment.
SERVPRO of Texarkana is eager to help community residents understand why mold finds a home attractive. We design strategies to remove current colonies while also inhibiting future outbreaks. Call us at (903) 832-4400 to schedule an evaluation.

What to Know About Mold and Your Roof

Rooftop damage to a local commercial property
How to Keep the Roof of Your Business Mold Free
When the weather in the Ark-La-Tex turns wet, you may find there's a tendency for mold to turn up on the roof. Left untended these spores can even become black mold. Fortunately, with some knowledge it’s possible to catch mold or even prevent its growth. Here are some things you may want to know to keep the roof of your business mold free.
1. The Growing Conditions
A roof leak can become the prime growing ground for mold to form. Because mold is a fungus it doesn’t require much to get started. Often times enough moisture and a food source can be enough. This means that if you have leaks in your roof, or places where water can pool, there’s a decent chance mold could set in.
2. How Long Growth Takes
In most cases regular mold can begin to grow between one to two days after conditions become wet enough. Black mold can start around eight to twelve days. This is why it’s so important to address leaks and other water damage to the roof as quickly as possible.
3. What To Do
If water damage is found on the roof, or you notice a ceiling leak, it’s important to take care of the problem as quickly as possible. You can contact SERVPRO of Texarkana to have an assessment done. Our technicians can not only let you know where the problem areas are, but also take care of the full mold remediation process from cleanup to restoration.
Understanding where and how mold grows can help you catch potential problems before they turn into black mold. If you do find mold on your company’s roof, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Texarkana (903)832-4400
Are Home Mold Testing Kits Accurate?
4/15/2019 (Permalink)
Trust the experts at SERVPRO of Texarkana for mold testing and remediation
Homeowners may consider using home mold testing kits due to the comparatively low cost of these tests relative to professional testing and analysis. There are several reasons why expert testing is more accurate and useful. Learn more about the shortcomings of DIY mold tests and why it is worth it to seek the services of a certified environmental hygienist or full-service mold restoration company in your home.
False Positives
Home mold tests vary in sensitivity. Many tests are prone to return positive results for several reasons:
- Mold spores are everywhere
- Some kits are not properly calibrated
- Results may be ambiguous
A home mold testing kit may react to the presence of spores without factoring in whether microbial volatile organic compounds are present. These off-gases are released during the active growth cycle of fungi and indicate that mold is actively growing.
Inaccurate Species Identification
Most home mold tests are not precise enough to identify the species of mold. It is not possible to make a positive identification based on color. Black mold or Stachybotrys is actually dark green early in the growth cycle. As there are more than 100,000 known species of mold, lab testing is necessary to obtain an accurate identification.
No Expert Opinions
Environmental hygienists and mold specialists can offer informed opinions throughout the professional testing and remediation process. Insight into the following factors may be helpful:
- The location of mold growth
- Potential causes
- Whether a species of mold is toxigenic
All of these factors will impact the type of cleaning methods and equipment necessary to remediate mold damage. Remediation may be more affordable and successful if expert knowledge is available.
A home mold kit may be affordable, but it is unlikely to be as accurate as professional testing. Homeowners should put the money they might spend on attempts at DIY mold tests toward expert mold testing and remediation services. SERVPRO of Texarkana can fix the problem "Like it never even happened."
Unhealthy Environments
3/12/2019 (Permalink)
Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall, and insulation, provide food sources for mold to flourish.
Intrusion of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusions can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failure, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control. When water intrusions are not addressed right away the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth. Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments. If the humidity and moisture levels in a water damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health threat.
Unfortunately, water-related disasters can occur at any time. The costs and effects of water damage are unpredictable, which is why it is important to begin the mitigation process in a timely manner.

4 Steps To Stop Mold Growth
2/8/2019 (Permalink)
Mold is found everywhere and can grow quickly
How To Stop Mold Growth
Mold can grow anywhere if moisture and organic material are present. Mold spores are everywhere, and an environment that has everything necessary for fungi to thrive runs a high risk of developing a mold problem. Mold can start growing in as little as 24 to 48 hours after water damage. Take these four steps to stop mold growth in your home.
1. Reduce Moisture
Lowering moisture levels is the single most important mold prevention method. Mold requires moisture and a source of food in order to grow. Extract excess water introduced to a residence from any source and run a dehumidifier to draw out residual moisture.
2. Schedule a Mold Test
If your home has recently experienced water damage, it may be advisable to schedule a mold test. An environmental hygienist or mold specialist can take air or spore samples to determine which species of mold are present and determine the extent of an infestation.
3. Make a Remediation Plan
If less than 10 square feet of visible, non-toxigenic mold is present, a homeowner can take steps to clean up and prevent the damage. It is advisable to seek assistance from a mold damage remediation service for a widespread infestation or one involving hidden mold or toxigenic species.
4. Clean or Tear Out Moldy Materials
Mold prevention and remediation experts can recommend which materials can be cleaned and which should be torn out or disposed of and replaced. In general, hard surfaces with superficial mold are better candidates for cleaning than porous materials such as carpet or drywall.
These steps can be useful for stopping mold growth at a residence or commercial property. While mitigating water damage and reducing moisture may be enough to slow or stop active growth, mold spores may continue to pose problems or spread to more advantageous areas until existing colonies are eliminated.

Every morning, you might pour water into your coffee machine as you eagerly await that cup of energy. While the water does find its way into the coffee cup, that doesn't mean the entire inside of the machine is dry. Mold can grow there, and this mold can enter into your morning beverage.
Kiddie Pool
During the summer months, the kids may love to take the hose and fill up the plastic pool in the backyard. The water keeps them refreshed and entertained for a significant period of time. However, you might skip over drying off the pool and find yourself in need of mold remediation services to combat it.
Bathroom Cabinets
Plenty of people have seen mold coming to life in the corners of their bathrooms, but the cabinets can also act as major spots for this existence. The mold may start to grow on or inside of the cabinets, requiring a call to SERVPRO of Texarkana.
Refrigerator
Reaching inside of the fridge and grabbing some old food that has become covered in mold is an unpleasant experience. As much as you wipe down the fridge, you might have accidentally dropped some crumbs or pieces of food in the back of it at one point. Unless you are reaching back into the depths of the fridge on a regular basis, these crevices may have become dwellings for mold.
Water Bottles
Grabbing your water bottle before heading to work or school is a way to make sure you are hydrated, but you probably don't get every last drop of water out of it. Ensuring that the bottle is properly cleaned before your next usage is one way to make certain that you are not ingesting mold in a bid for proper hydration.
Mold can lurk in many places inside and outside of your home. Working with the professionals is a smart way to determine if you have mold living on your property and to figure out where that mold is coming from. By treating the source, SERVPRO of Texarkana can help to ensure that the mold is away from you for good. Call us 903-832-4400!

PREVENTING MOLD - CONTROLLING HUMIDITY, TEMPERATURE AND VENTILATION
6/29/2018 (Permalink)
Mold growing inside the wall cavities resulting from a water loss that the owners thought they handled themselves, until the smell started.
The key to preventing and stopping indoor mold growth is to control excessive moisture and condensation. Keeping susceptible areas in the home clean and dry is critical. In general, mold will not grow indoors without water, dampness or excessive moisture.
Three main factors contribute to condensation of water on building surfaces:
- Relative Humidity: Condensation occurs when the air is saturated with water and it cannot hold any more moisture. For example, steam generated from bathroom showers or from cooking can fill up the air with moisture, which will then condense into drops of water on cooler surfaces, such as mirrors and windows. Where possible, localized sources of humidity, such as clothes dryers, should be directly vented to the outdoors. To lower indoor humidity during warm, humid weather, air conditioners should be used.
- Temperature: Warm air holds more moisture than cold air. Condensation occurs when warm humid air comes into contact with a cold surface and the moisture condenses into water. This can often be seen on single-pane windows, where water condenses and then runs down, causing the wood frames and sills to rot and the wall under the windows to blister.
- Poor Ventilation: Indoor humidity can build up if there is not enough ventilation and exchange of indoor and outdoor air. Where there is little or no air movement, such as behind dressers and cabinets, surfaces can remain cooler than surrounding areas, which can lead to increased condensation and mold growth. It is recommended that the area is ventilated and the occupants use exhaust fans (vented to the outdoors) to remove moisture from high-humidity areas, particularly in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry areas. Furniture should be moved slightly away from walls so that air can freely pass behind it. Air should be allowed to circulate between rooms and regularly ventilate to remove humid air. Fans should be used as needed.
- In the case of floods or leaking pipes, any standing water should be promptly removed and water-damaged materials should either be dried out and cleaned, or removed and replaced. Porous materials that are wet for more than 48 hours are likely to produce mold growth and should be discarded. In instances where the water damage is extensive, it is recommended that you call SERVPRO of Texarkana at 903-832-4400, so that we may assist you in preventing mold growth after a water damage,or to remove the mold if it is already an issue. SERVPRO of Texarkana is a licensed mold remediation contractor in the State of Texas.
- Other things that can be done are to clean and repair gutters regularly, make sure the ground slopes down and away from the home’s foundation and keep air conditioner drip pans and drain lines clean. In addition, in air conditioned buildings in hot and humid climates, vinyl wall coverings on the interior sides of exterior walls should not be used, as these materials can trap moisture, resulting in mold growth underneath them.
Mold Remediation Steps

When there's a water intrusion, like a roof leak or a broken water line, mold can quickly become a problem in your home or business. Mold can affect your health and can also cause significant damage to your property. Fortunately, SERVPRO of Texarkana professionals have the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem. Although every mold damage scenario is different, requiring a unique solution, the general mold remediation process stays the same. The following steps illustrate a "typical" mold removal process.
Step 1 - Call SERVPRO of Texarkana
The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call us, SERVPRO of Texarkana, at 903-832-4400. One of our representatives will ask a series of questions to help determine the necessary equipment, resources and personnel needed.
Step 2 - Inspection & Damage Assessment
Your property will be carefully inspected for signs of mold using technology designed to detect mold and hidden water sources. Mold grows best in dark, moist areas with a food source (drywall, wood, etc.), so the areas that promote growth in homes are often out of sight.
Step 3 - Mold Containment
Various containment procedures will be placed to prevent the spread of mold and isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process.
Step 4 - Air Filtration
Specialized filtration equipment captures microscopic mold spores out of the air. SERVPRO of Texarkana technicians utilize powerful air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in progress.
Step 5 - Removing Mold & Mold-Infested Materials
The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. Antifungal and antimicrobial treatments will be used to eliminate mold colonies and help prevent new colonies from forming. Removing and disposing of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and flooring, may be necessary to remediate heavy mold growth.
Step 6 - Cleaning Contents & Belongings
SERVPRO of Texarkana cleans your furniture, decorative items, curtains and any other items affected by mold. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and sanitize your belongings. We are also able to remove odors and deodorize using fogging equipment.
Step 7 - Restoration
Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may be removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet, or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.
SERVPRO of Texarkana Professionals understand mold growth, and have the training and equipment to remediate mold in your home or business. Call us now if you suspect mold growth in your home at 903-832-4400
Mold Myths and Facts
6/22/2018 (Permalink)
There is a lot of information about mold out there, but how much of it is true? No one wants to deal with this issue, but it is important to know which are the correct steps, and which are wrong, if it becomes a problem in your home. There are many mold myths that could lead to the spreading of growth if they are followed. To ensure you know fact from fiction, we have outlined some of the most well-known myths as well as the facts.
Bleach Kills Mold
Bleach is a not good option for killing mold. It is effective if the growth is on a hard, solid surface, such as tile or glass, but it will not work when the surface is porous. Unfortunately, many growths occur on these materials, like drywall and wood, in our homes. Bleach does not soak into porous materials, which means it can’t reach the growth spread out through the pores, it only kills the surface. The outer surface of the affected area will appear clean, as the bleach will have whitened any stains and scrubbed away the exterior mold, but the internal mold will be quick to grow back.
Bleach may even intensify a mold problem. The chlorine in bleach quickly evaporates which leaves behind a lot of water. Water that will soak into porous materials and then feed the mold that was left behind, potentially making the problem worse than it was originally.
Dead Mold Doesn't Need to Be Removed
Killing mold should not be the goal during remediation. Even “dead” mold can continue to act as an allergen and spread throughout your house. In order to remove all risks of continued growth in your home the affected areas need to be completely removed with correct remediation procedures.
Any Black Mold is Toxic
There are over 100,000 different species of mold, and they can be any size, shape, or color. Just because a growth is black it does not mean that it is Stachybotrys Chartarum, the species that is known as the toxic black mold. The only way to truly identify the species of mold in your house is for it to be tested by an industrial hygienist.
Fix Mold by Painting Over it
Although it is a common practice, you cannot fix a mold problem by painting over it. Even when using mold resistant paint, a growth will not be killed or prevented from spreading. Paint will, however, make it more difficult to see when the mold has grown.
Mold resistant paint can be used in rooms with high moisture levels, such as bathrooms and kitchens, to help prevent growth. Using this paint is in no way a guarantee that you will never experience a mold problem, but when painted on dry, mold-free surfaces it can help prevent it in at risk rooms.
Mold Must be Tested Before it is Removed
Having mold testing can be an important, and expensive, step when determining if you have a mold problem in your home; however, it is not always necessary. All mold, regardless of its type, should be treated in the same manor by a remediation company. If your home is showing signs of mold, particularly if there is visible growth, then you know you have a problem that must be handled. Unless you personally want to know which species of mold is growing in your home, testing is unnecessary when it comes to removing it as the procedure and precautions taken should remain the same.
Mold is Only a Problem in Old Homes
Many people associate mold with older homes, but it can grow in any house, regardless of age, when provided with the right conditions. All mold requires to grow is darkness, a food source (typically drywall or wood in a home), and moisture. If you have any excessive moisture problems in a new home, you may soon have a mold issue too.

Preventing Mold in Your Bathroom
6/22/2018 (Permalink)
Mold in bathrooms is a common problem in almost every home. Darkness combined with excessive moisture provides the perfect conditions for consistent mold growth. Constantly cleaning and re-caulking, to keep a growth problem under control, can be time consuming and expensive. The best defense against mold is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Here are a few tricks to help you stop mold growth in your bathroom:
- Run the ventilation fan while you are showering, and leave it on for 15 minutes after. If you don’t have a fan open a window or use a dehumidifier.
- Use a squeegee after a bath or shower to remove some of the excess moisture. Instead of a squeegee, a small towel can be used to dry any accumulated water.
- Try to avoid keeping a lot of things inside of the bath/shower. They can hide mold growth as well as collecting water to promote it. Children’s toys are particularly notorious for growing mold, so be sure to dry them as much as possible and clean them regularly.
- Fix leaky faucets and shower heads.
- Use a shower curtain that can be put in the washing machine. There are also many mold-resistant liners available.
- Clean out the shower and wash bathroom rugs regularly.
- Check for any other signs of mold in the bathroom under the sink, behind the toilet, etc.
If you are consistently experiencing mold in your bathroom, regardless of how often you clean, then you may have a larger, hidden growth problem. Call SERVPRO of Texarkana at 903-832-4400, and one of our mold experts will be at your house quickly to assess the issue.
Does Your Texarkana Home Have A Mold Problem?
2/2/2017 (Permalink)
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
